Overkill
Title: Immortalis
Over kill is one of rare band which practices since the 80s without having make of breaks of career not even of unhoped-for return. On the contrary, we can notice a regularity for their release albums. Thus, since the last album in date ReliXIV taken out in 2005, we shall be surprised seeing this year 'Immortalis' them 14 ° opus. Overkill remains one of rare group of thrash integrates, because we are once again entitled to a real album of thrash metal without ballads nor honeyed voices, or electronics samples, who would come to destroy a whole universe. . Guitars, battery, low, vocal aggressive and irritating are the only elements authorized for 'Overkill'. The group does not try to reconquer a new public with this album. Although this style did not make the unanimity of the music fan heavy metal, Overkill is not allowed tempt by easy solutions as for example, make a more popular thrash. With a powerful sound which goes to him marvelously and which Overkill have never known previously, this album sounds one can differently by raport in the ancients opus, while staying of Overkill naturally. The rhythmicc ring well in accordance with a hard-hitting and surprising drum kit which looks of the depth to the compositions. Soloes guitars are very present throughout the album and effective. In general the album is very good! Bien au contraire, on peut noter une régularité pour leur sortie d'albums. Alors depuis le dernier en date ReliXIV en 2005 on est pas surpris de voir apparaître cette année ' Immortalis ' leur 14° opus. Overkill reste un des rare groupe de thrash intègre, car on a droit une fois de plus à un véritable album de thrash métal sans ballades ni voix mielleuses, ou arrangements électronique qui viendrait détruire tout un univers. Guitares , batterie, basse, vocaux agressifs et irritants sont les seuls éléments autorisés pour ' Overkill '. On comprend que le groupe n'essaye pas de reconquérir un nouvel auditoire avec cet album. Bien que ce style ne fasse pas l'unanimité des fan de musique heavy métal. Overkill ne se laisse pas tenter par des solutions faciles comme par exemple, faire un thrash plus populaire. Avec un son adéquat qui lui va à merveille et que le groupe n'a jamais connu auparavant, cet album sonne un peux différemment que les ancien, tout en restant du Overkill bien entendu. Les rythmiques sonnent bien en harmonie avec une batterie percutante et surprenante qui donne de la profondeur aux compositions. Les solos guitares sont très présents et efficaces. Dans l'ensemble c'est que du bon ! Overkill ne décevra pas ses fans, et risque même de reconquérir d'autres adeptes de musique extrême. Avec cet album au titre non hasardeux ' Immortalis ' , Over kill démontre que le groupe et les valeurs qu'il défend demeurent de nos jours immortel…
Awake is a Young english group of progressive modern heavy metal based in 2000. They play in a rather classic register: melodic rhythmic guitars and bass, keyboards which bring a symphonic touch by moments, rather slow tempos strewed with acoustic passages. The group mixed in an excellent sound. The singing has nothing extraordinary but are of good taste and rather mastered well.Damage that it do not bring more dynamism to the whole album, which is little enlivened in general. This album's far from an inescapable one. And it is indeed pity because the group have the capacity techniques to make something of much better. The question that it is necessary to settle would be: Why this style of music they are working redo what has already been done as? Awake also has its strong points such, riffs catching, arrangements executed goods that determine the personal touch in the group. On the whole we have a rather melancholy album (something quite rare for a group of progressive metal) especially towards the end of the disc. With the last three titles, which are hovering on the edge of the ballad. We can not call into question the competence of the group but for the future we would like to see a more personal album, and why not more extraordinary? Awake est un Jeune groupe britanique de heavy metal progressif moderne fondé en 2000. Ils jouent dans un registre assez classique : guitares rythmiques mélodiques et basse, claviers qui apportent une touche symphonique par moments, tempos assez lents parsemé de passages acoustiques. L'ensemble mixé dans un son excellent. Les chants n'ayant rien d'extraordinaire sont de bon goût et plutôt bien maîtrisés, dommage qu'il n'apportent pas plus de dynamisme à l'ensemble de l'album, qui est assez peux mouvementé dans son ensemble. On reste bien loin d'un album incontournable. Et c'est bien dommage car le groupe à la capacité techniques de faire quelque chose de bien mieux. La question qu'il faut se poser serais : pourquoi les musicien de ce style s'acharnent ils a refaire ce qui as déjà été fait ? Awake a aussi ses points fort comme par exemple, des refrains accrocheurs, des arrangements biens exécutés qui déterminent la touche personnelle du groupe. Dans l'ensemble nous avons un album plutôt mélancolique (chose assez rare pour un groupe de métal progressif) surtout vers la fin du disque avec les trois derniers titres qui frôlent la limite de la ballade. On ne peux pas mettre en doute les compétences du groupe mais a l'avenir on aimeraient voir un album plus personnel et pourquoi pas plus extraordinaire ? Car ce qui est a craindre pour cet album serais qu'ils passe inaperçu par mis des centaines d'autres productions tout aussi bonnes.
Nifelheim
Title: Envoy of LuciferSwedish of Nifelheim returns to us in this end of the year 2007 with its 4° album of pure Thrash/black metal. 7 years separates it from its predecessor 'Servents Of Darkness' out in 2000. The formula remains unchanged: riffs thrash, influenced solos guitar of the Eighties (Motorhead), vocal with the 'Venom' and 'impaled nazarene ', the whole on an overall musical bottom unhealthy and determinated with the raw sound, but completely adapted to the style. We would believe oneself to retrogress 10 years, when: Venom, Possessed/Sodom/Bathory... and well of others were with the apogee of their career. Although the unit can appear retro and exceeded to ears of some, it is with my taste, probably the best album of the discography of the group. in this album the dimensions retro one is original, which would usually tend to make the contrary effect, like one could note it with other groups. Here the style seems to belong to hundred percent with Nifelheim They are really made for this kind of music and do not have to change some... the compositions are simple and purified, superfluity leaves place with what is essential and it goes! All is well proportioned, it is what makes the force of the compositions. With this album, musicians of Nifelheim prove that they have the talent to honour the succession with the best extreme groups of the eighties. This album which is already has my taste impossible to circumvent and an unhoped-for surprise in this end of year 2007, will be probably the reference of the kind...
Les suédois de Nifelheim nous reviennent en cette fin d'année 2007 avec son 4° album de pure Thrash / black métal. 7 années le sépare de son prédécesseur ' Servents Of Darkness' sorti en 2000. La formule reste inchangée : riffs thrash , solos guitare influencés des années 80 (Motorhead), vocaux à la ' Venom ' et ' impaled nazarene ', le tout sur un fond musical d'ensemble malsain et déterminé au son crade, mais totalement adapté au style. On se croiraient revenir 10 ans en arrière, lorsque : Venom , Possessed / Sodom / Bathory … et bien d'autres étaient à l'apogée de leur carrière. Bien que l'ensemble puisse paraître rétro et dépassé aux oreilles de certains, il est à mon goût, probablement le meilleur album de la discographie du groupe. Le coté rétro fait l'originalité de cet album, ce qui aurait d'habitude tendance à faire l'effet contraire, comme on a pu le constater avec d'autres groupes qui, essayent de faire un retour aux sources se sont complètement planté. Ici le style semble appartenir à cent pour cent à Nifelheim. Il ne faut pas chercher plus loin, ils sont vraiment fait pour ce genre de musique et ne doivent pas en changer… les compositions sont simples et épurés, le superflu laisse place à ce qui est essentiel et ça marche ! Tout est bien dosé, c'est ce qui fait la force des compositions. Avec cet album, Les musiciens de Nifelheim prouvent qu'ils ont le talent pour honorer la succession des meilleurs groupes extrêmes des années 80. Cet album qui est déjà a mon goût un incontournable et une surprise inespérée en cette fin d ‘année 2007, sera probablement la référence du genre… attention aux groupes qui jouent dans le même registre , les suédois ont mis la barre très très haut …
Doug Stapp
Title: The Earth Says HelloThe New CD from Doug Stapp , had raised the bar from his last outing. The production is great, the guitar tones are thick and huge, the rhythms crunchy, and the playing is great. The cover of Frankenstein featuring Scott Stine is one of the scariest versions I have heard as far as guitar insanity is concerned. The cd has plenty of up-tempo tunes. On “704” Doug lets loose his melodic side and also some pretty scary shred. Again, the tone is thick . “The earth says hello” is kinda from the Satch handbook of writing: good melodic riffs and not over playing (he even uses a line somewhat like “Summer Song” wah and all). It’s a great driving in your car driving way too fast kinda tune. “13 steps” is nuts, lots of great playing , the whole cd is filled with great playing. My fav track is Mr Quackers is fun lots of whammy pedal abuse. If you have not checked doug out this is a great place to start, the only problem I had was I was playing it way too loud . It’s good and crunchy with satchy bits all over... and lots of insane guitar stuff. Check it out!
Le nouveau cd de Doug Stapp est d'un niveau supérieur à son prédécesseur. La production est super, les sonorité de guitares sont énormes et formidables, les rythmiques sont crunchy et le jeu général est super. La reprise de Frankenstein sur laquelle il y a Scott Stine est l'une des versions les plus effrayantes que j'ai entendu niveau démence guitaristique. Le cd a regorge de titres up-tempo. Sur « 704 » Doug libère son côté mélodique mais aussi son côté shred assez effrayant. Une fois de plus le son est énorme. « The Earth says hello » est un peu un titre à la Satriani avec de bon riffs mélodiques (il utilise même une ligne mélodique à la « Summer Song » avec la wah wah et tout le toutim). Attention aux excès de vitesse si vous écoutez ce titre dans votre voiture ! « 13 steps » est fou, avec des super plans, comme l'intégralité du cd en comporte beaucoup. Mon titre favori est Mr Quackers qui est un titre drôle rempli de pédal whammy. Si vous n'avez jamais écouté Doug, c'est le bon album qu'il faut pour commencer. Le seul souci que j'ai eu avec cet album c'est que je l'ai écouté vraiment trop fort. C'est bon et crunchy avec des relents de Satch sur tout la longueur de l'album... et avec des plans de fou à la guitare.

Dr. Sin is a Brazilian band from Sao Paulo who formed in 1993. They play an “old school”-type hard rock. Bravo is their 11th album.My opinion is divided on this album. The vocals are very good, the singer has definitely a good voice, reminding me of Motley Crue; however after a few songs, it gets a bit tiring to listen to, I find. the music is great, technical, well delivered. The guitar is great with very good solos, and original approaches to the music. The bass lines are very good, and offer even a great solo on one song. The drumming is also very good. I guess this album will be appreciated by musicians interested in the genre. There are many influences, hard-rock based, Guns N’ Roses, Symphony X, Iron Maiden, Ugly Kid Joe, Skid Row are some of the names that pop into my head when I listen to their music. These are good influences to have in my opinion…The songs are 5 – 6 minutes long on average, explaining the length of the album. Some songs are quite cheesy, very 80’s Hard Rock – like. The mix of the album is very good, every instrument can be heard. So what’s wrong with me, then will you ask? Well, even if I can’t criticize this album in a precise way, I just find it tiring to listen to in its entirety. I guess if a song is played at random on a mp3 player, it will go down very well (that is what I will do actually); but on its own, I find it very tedious to listen from end to end. But I still like it… this is an uncomfortable situation for me… It is like Devin Townsend’s stuff: I like it but I can’t listen too much of it at the same time; it’s too dense…

Mon opinion sur cet album est assez partagée, mais j’y reviendrai. Le chant est très bon avec une très bonne voix, me rappelant Motley crue; cependant, après quelques chansons, la voix principale devient fatigante. La musique est très bonne, technique, bien jouée. Les lignes de guitare sont très bien ainsi que les solos, qui ont une approche relativement differente de ce que l’on entend généralement.Les lignes de basse sont également très bonnes, et offrent aussi un très bon solo sur l’une des chansons. La batterie finalement est bonne, mais ne ressort peut etre pas autant du lot comme les 2 autres instruments. Je pense que cet album plaira aux musiciens, amateurs du genre. De nombreuses influences sont présentes dans la musique de Dr. Sin, Guns N’ Roses, Symphony X, Iron Maiden, Ugly Kid Joe, Skid Row sont les noms qui me viennent en premier à l’esprit en entendant leur musique; celles-ci sont de bonnes influences à avoir à mon avis... Les chansons durent entre 5 et 6 minutes en moyrennes, ce qui explique la durée de l’abum. Certaines chansons peuvent être assez « gnangnan », très hard rock des anness 80 Le mix de l’album est très bon, chaque instrument peut être clairement entendu. Donc quel est mon probleme avec cet album me demanderez-vous ? Bien que je ne puisse critiquer cet album sur un point bien particulier, je le trouve juste difficile à écouter d’un bout à l’autre. Si une chanson est jouée en mode aléatoire sur un lecteur mp3, elle passera tres bien (c’est d’ailleurs ce que je ferai); mais l’album s'écouté en sa totalité devient vite fatigant. Mais j’aime quand meme les chansons de Dr Sin…
